General Info: The Law & Mediation Practice Professionalism Series is comprised of 28, two-hour courses. Each course is comprised of two (2) modules, six (6) lessons, and is two (2) hours in total length. Each course in this series has been approved for 2 Dual CLE Hours by the Tennessee Commission for CLE & Specialization.

Anger Management helps attorneys and mediators understand anger and the opportunities available through effective anger management processes and alternatives. Anger is a universal experience. Dogs get angry, cats get angry, bees get angry, and so do humans. You don’t have to be a mental health professional to know that managing anger productively is something few individuals, organizations, and societies do well. Yet research tells us that those who do manage their anger at work are much more successful than those who don’t.

The co-worker who can productively confront his teammate about his negative attitude increases his team’s chance of success as well as minimizes destructive conflicts. The legal professional who can defuse the angry client or opponent not only keeps their clientele loyal but also makes their own day(s) less troublesome. This course is designed to help give you and your firm that edge.

What You Will Learn

• Use the five-step method to break old patterns and replace them with a model for assertive anger.
• Use an anger log to identify your hot buttons and triggers.
• Control your own emotions when faced with other peoples’ anger.

Dr. Clay Phillips

Dr. Clay Phillips is a conflict resolution and soft skills expert, and consults organizational leaders to develop viable and sustainable companies by creating strategically healthy, people-focused, and purpose-driven work environments. He is a highly regarded leadership development coach, educator and mentor working with private corporations, governmental agencies and institutions of higher learning across the Southeastern United States. He specializes in design, creation, and implementation of highly effective and measurable talent development programs, and workplace conflict management systems in all industries.

Dr. Phillips has been a Tennessee Supreme Court (TSC) Rule 31 Listed Family (Specially Trained in Domestic Violence Issues), and General Civil Mediator since 2007. He has also been an approved TSC Rule 31 Mediator Trainer since early 2008, and has trained more than 1,200 mediators for Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 31 certification. He was the first non-attorney approved by the Tennessee Supreme Court to provide Rule 31 Mediator training programs. In his capacity as a private practice mediator, Dr. Phillips has mediated more than 400 cases (court-annexed/ordered, and pre-filing) ranging from divorce, to employment relations, to personal injury, to medical and dental malpractice, to wrongful death, to products liability, and contracts.

In his corporate consulting role, Dr. Phillips has personally trained and coached more than 4,500 professionals (front line, management, director-level and C-Suite in private and public sectors) in soft skills and leadership development. To-date, he has developed more than 120 one-, two- and three-day Soft Skills and leadership development workshops, as well as hundreds of multi-hour presentations on these topics. Dr. Phillips has spoken/presented on these topics before various Chambers of Commerce, SHRM Chapters, Bar Associations, the Tennessee Personnel Managers Association, the Tennessee Juvenile Justice Association and Convention, and the Tennessee Departments of Labor and Workforce Development, and Human Resources. He is the sole provider of soft skills training on the Tennessee Eligible Training Provider list.

Dr. Phillips enjoys part-time faculty position in the Graduate School of Business and Management at Argosy University’s Nashville, Tennessee and Phoenix, Arizona campuses. In this role, he teaches conflict management, leadership, and communications courses in several graduate and doctoral programs. Dr. Phillips also enjoys the appointments of Doctoral Dissertation Committee Chairperson, and Subject Matter Expert, Appeals Committee Chairperson, and Institutional Review Board (IRB) Committee Member. He is the author of a regionally accredited (SACS) Master of Arts in Conflict Resolution degree program curriculum.

Culminating from his vast professional and educational experience, Dr. Phillips created the popular Phillips Interpersonal Conflict Condition Model. This model is widely hailed by conflict resolution professionals as the centerpiece for effectively illustrating and understanding the conflict relationship between individuals in the workplace, avocation and home. He has authored two self-published books “Getting Started as a Mediator: The Seven Steps for Starting and Building a Mediation Practice” and “Conflict, Conflict Resolution, and Mediation: Theory, Process, and Practice”.

Dr. Phillips holds Bachelors and Masters degrees in Business Administration, and a Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership. He and his wife Deborah have lived in the Middle Tennessee area for more than 28 years. Prior to moving to the Nashville area, he spent six years (Active Duty) in the United States Navy Cryptologic Direct Support Element (Black Ops) as an analyst/operator and Submarine Warfare Specialist.
